When you connect from a Windows NT 3.1 computer to a LAN Manager or
LM/X 1.x server, you may be prompted for a password.

Some down-level servers may be incapable of handling encrypted
passwords. Due to security considerations, Windows NT 3.1 computers
will not send an unencrypted password to the network unless the user
types it in. During session establishment, a protocol level is
negotiated. If the server being connected to indicates that it cannot
handle encrypted passwords, the the Windows NT computer will prompt
the user as follows:
The password is invalid for \\servername\sharename.
Type the password for \\servername\sharename:
If the correct user password is typed in at this point, the connection
will complete successfully.
